Beirut – Scenic World and Postcards from Italy

Today I’ve been doing house maintaintence and I’ve been listening to the album Gulag Orkestar by the band Beirut.
Here’s a couple of songs from the album

Thanks. I checked out the link but it’s only available, free of charge to people in the US. A couple of times a year, my wife and I spend a weekend on the internet checking out Amazon looking for new music because the radio here in Australia is pathetic.

Hey Razz, great sounds. The singer’s voice quality reminds me a bit of Morrissey but with far more positive subject matter. The Postcards from Italy track made me think of you and Engogirl. I won’t get mushy here, but I think you’ll know what I mean.

I just went to iTunes and looked them up and yup, there they were. Seems that I have some music to buy this morning. I’d never heard of Beirut before this. It’s great stuff, no doubt. Looks like you just created another fan.

Excellent choice. One of my best friends was roommates with a member of Beirut last year – really turned me on to their european sound. A very french sound, very cool.

Be sure to go back through the archives. Basic premise – a cool band performs a few songs live on the streets of Paris, usually in Montmartre. Great videos.

Glad you liked it. The lead singer is so young, I almost can’t believe he wrote music with such a worldly sound. It’s very prescient of you to think of Engogirl and I when listening the “Postcards”, because with a bit of luck we’ll be in Europe for 2 or 3 months next year.

I hope you like the album. It takes a little while to get into but it’s really rewarding to hang in there. I always put a link into Amazon just in case what I’ve put up is hard to get.
I tried to buy this album here in Australia and there was only one copy in the whole country. I’ve almost given up on the record stores here because they all have the same stuff that the radio plays and it’s mostly crap.

The plan so far is that we will be driving from France to Turkey with a bit of cycling in Germany (in the Moselle and possibly Rhine areas) on the way. Engogirl said we may have to drop into the London office of the company she works for, so who knows? We may be, so to speak, just down the street from you! We’d love to catch up. Maybe we could even go to that Gordon Ramsay pub if you think it’s any good.

I saw Beirut live last year and was blown away. I went up and talked to the lead singer after the show (that’s how small the venue was) and made a complete idiot out of myself. It’s a habit, I’ve yet to break. You also may enjoy DeVotchka, devotchka.net.

I do enjoy Devotchka and it sounds like we have similar taste in music. I came across them when I bought the soundtrack to the movie “Little Miss Sunshine”.
