All The Dumb Things

A cautionary tale in development

The last photo I took in Vietnam. 2007

Posted by razzbuffnik on October 2nd, 2008

I took this shot in the rain on the way to the airport to leave Vietnam.

The scene is so typical of Vietnamese traffic on the highways that I just had to take it.

I spent an hour off to the side of a busy industrial park last week trying to get a photo like this!! I remember a post you wrote about “how” to do the panning and tried to remember what you said. Oh, man. Opposite direction of motion, right? I got some of the blur alright but the subject was always included in the blur! I’m trying again after seeing this. Yowser.

The opposite direction thing is for when you shoot to pan with slow hutter speed and flash. Like for the images in these posts.

For normal panning just follow the subject and the background will blur like is this post.

The shot in this post was easy because I was in a cab travelling at the same speed as the motorcycle and all I had to do was use a slow shutter speed.

Blimmin eck. I have yet to post the Vietnam stuff from our trip but how you ever managed to take that shot amazes me. You are a photographic wunder. There are so many people in the traffic over there. So many. Somehow you make it look simple. Aaaagh. I’m a useless photographer compared to you!!! (Compliment, my friend!)

There you go again, photographing what’s in front of you…

I really like the juxtaposition of the woven panniers on the modern motor bike. I love that sort of look.

Thanks for the compliment. It wasn’t thast hard a shot to take as I was in a taxi that was going at the same speed as the motorbike. It would’ve been much more difficult to take such a shot from the pavement.

Actually I cheated, I photographed what was beside me.

    Turkish.

I bet the chickens were glad they were in something that had good ventilation, rather than the little plastic boxes or leather bags one sees on motorcycles here in the west.
